St Gatien Stables were built in the late 1880’s by the famous Bob Sherwood Sr who trained St Gatien (pictured below) to win the Derby in 1884.   Since that time St Gatien has been one of the most successful and consistent of Newmarket’s training establishments.  Robert Armstrong (from whom I purchased St Gatien Stables) and his father before him have both been responsible for sending out many big race winners over the years. These have included:

  • Prix de L’Abbaye
  • Prix du Moulin
  • July Cup (twice)
  • Prix de la Foret (twice)
  • The Ribblesdale
  • Princess Margaret
  • The Lockinge
  • Yorkshire Cup
  • Diadem Stakes (twice)
  • Queen Elizabeth Stakes
There have also been four European Champions trained at St Gatien:

  • Moorestyle
  • Never So Bold
  • Sparkler
  • Maroof

When Robert Armstrong placed St Gatien on the market, the top yard along with the main trainer's house were sold separately to Mr John Clarke who now leases his 30 stables to Peter Chapple-Hyam. I then bought what are known as the middle (13 boxes) and lower (15 boxes) yards at St Gatien along with the paddock, isolation boxes and what was then the head lads house which is situated between the middle and lower yards.

Newmarket police station is opposite the entrance of St Gatien and it is said to be the only yard in England overlooked by a police station!
