I pulled my old racing breeches on at Fakenham today to take part in a "Retired East Anglian Point to Point Jockeys" charity race run over a very long two miles! Yes I literally had to pull and tug on my breeches and boots (its strange how once items of clothing are left in the wardrobe for a few years unused, they shrink!). With all the safety pins holding them together its a wonder I did the weight at all!
I chose to give my hunter Airstrike a race course education, we both went extremely well for a circuit but then fatigue seem to set in and on entering the back straight the jockey positively blew up and then to make matters worse on leaving the back straight the horse blew up!!
We finished some way down the field but both of us thoroughly enjoyed it.
A big well done has to go to Guy Disney who lost the lower part of his leg during active service in Afghanistan a year ago. This was his first race ride back and he finished a gallant second to Annie Bowles riding a hot shot of her Grand National winning trainer boyfriend Gordon Elliot. Well done to all - an amazing £28,000 was raised for Help The Heroes and the Countryside Alliance. |
